Scenic US 23 along Lake Huron's shore

sunny 83 °F

We left Mackinaw City on Sunday morning headed south on US #23 along the beautiful coastline of Lake Huron. Every 15 miles or so the State of Michigan built wayside parks with rest facilities and views of the lake. The communities all along the lake have marinas and accommodations for boaters, as well. Our destination for the first night was Tawas City, about half way to Dearborn. We stopped at the Elks Lodge for overnight parking and went into town for dinner. We found a small, family-owned restaurant just across the street from a lakeside park with a beautiful view. The weather was nice so we chose to eat outside.
An electrical problem developed back in Wausau so our only source of electricity was our onboard generator, which creates a problem due to the noise created by the genny. Most campgrounds restrict genny hours for this reason. Our stops in Sturgeon Bay and Mackinaw City produced no satisfactory repair service from the small local dealers. From Tawas City I called ahead to Dearborn and arranged to have it fixed on Friday at a large Camping World facility. The problem was diagnosed as an electrical transfer relay switch which transfers the 50 amp. shore power to 12 volt battery power.
Our destination of Dearborn is to visit the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Yesterday, we spent the day at the huge Henry Ford Museum taking first an "Insider Tour" given by a knowledgable docent. She gave us an overview of the place and, after lunch we spent the afternoon walking the exhibits until my hips ached. We viewed the film, "Apollo 11" at 4:00 pm at one of the theaters for it was included in our entrance package. It was a welcomed rest! It was about the moon shot 50 years ago this month. It hardly seems possible that 50 years have passed since that momentous event.
We returned to our campsite tired and sore from all the walking. A local Irish Pub seemed like a good place for dinner, and it was. More tomorrow..........
