Travel to the Southern Tip of America to begin journey

sunny 95 °F

Hi everyone!

This year I decided to begin my summer travels by starting in Key West then working northward toward cooler temperatures. My special friend Pat will be traveling with me for much of the time as she retired in January. It is nice to have a compatible companion to share this experience. The last couple of years she flew to meet me for a week or so, here & there.

Yesterday (Monday) we attached the little car to the tow bar and headed south out of Estero. A planned lunch stop along the way was in Everglade City, FL where we enjoyed soaking in the flavor of the surroundings of the Baron Collier Rod & Gun Club. Located on the water leading to the 10,000 Islands along the Gulf Coast it has attracted famous people for many decades, from politicians to movie actors. Six US Presidents have visited there for fishing and relaxation. We, of course, had a fresh fish meal on the screened porch overlooking the water. Beautiful. From there we proceeded south on US41, the Tamiami Trail, through miles of Everglade swamps to Homestead then on to Key Largo. Our campground is located overlooking the water with a beautiful view. I enjoyed my coffee this morning watching the sun rise.

Key Largo is noted for its tourism and Scuba Diving in particular. The clear waters, coral reefs, and ship wrecks attract thousands of visitors each year. Our friends recommended a restaurant called 'The Fish House' so we tried it. We discovered it had been featured on the Food Channel's Drive-ins, Diners, & Dives program. The menu was extensive with at least 6 choices of fish with each offering. We ordered an appetizer and entree's featured on the TV program. A delightful experience. As traveling strangers to a community there are dozens of eateries to choose from and having a recommendation from friends was appreciated.

The next leg of travel in on the Overland Highway US#1 to Key West. While this will be my 4th visit it is the first one driving. It is on my 'bucket list' of things to do before the 'pearly gates'!

With that I will sign off for now.
