ROAD TO GILLETTE, WYOMING

Destination: International Family Motor Coach Assn. Rally

sunny 75 °F

A Wyoming Good Morning to Y'all;

Once again, I chose an alternative route 'off the beaten track' to Gillette. It took me through the Salt Creek Basin northward from Casper about 120 miles to Gillette. Along the way were hundreds of oil wells pumping their 'black gold' into pipelines buried beneath the vast prairieland. Most of the light traffic encountered along the way were trucks related to the oil industry. Fortunately, there were plenty of designated passing lanes along the route.
I approached Gillette from the high plains and saw the city nestled in a valley below. A brief history: The community began as 'Donkey Town' named after Donkey Creek, then was renamed "Rocky Pile" after rocky draw. Founded in 1891 with the coming of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad and incorporated in 1892 less than two years after WY became a State. The railroad renamed the town Gillette after Edward Gillette, surveyor for the company (& to give it some sophistication). Today, it is a thriving city of 30+K due to the oil & gas industries and located on I-90 140 miles due west of Rapid City, SD. Strategically located for attracting vacationers/travelers who visit Mt. Rushmore & the Black Hills to the east and Yellowstone, Cody, and Jackson Hole to the west the City purchased 1,100 acres on the edge of town. On it they built a multi-event center, called CAM-PLEX. On the property they created 7 RV parks with 1,100 permanent RV sites with Elec., Water, Sewer hook-ups. Our rally has attracted 1,800 MH's- six hundred of which are self-contained & parked using their own generators for power (called boondocking).

Today, our program starts. For the fun of it, I put my name in to "Volunteer". Our organizational meeting is at 11:00 am. When I learn of my responsibilities, then I can determine the seminars of personal interest to attend. Seminars like; Suspensions roundtable, Ride & Handling; Tire Safety and Tire Pressure Monitoring; Roof-top Airconditioning Maintenance; Steering & Suspension; Top 10 Maintenance Tips every RVer Should Know; Boondocking; Understand, Monitor, and Protect Your RV Electrical System; Understanding your RV Insurance Policy; Coffee & Donuts, Ice Cream Social, & Happy Hour!!!
More to come...........
