Florida a Big State

Headed for Biloxie

semi-overcast 85 °F

With my chosen route, it has taken some time to get to the FL/AL state line. I will have driven about 725 miles when I cross into AL later this morning and I am just getting started on this adventure! Biloxie, MS is about 225 miles from Pensacola so I should get there by mid-afternoon. A trip to the famous Casino is on my 'bucket list'. With my $20.00 investment at the machines I plan on hitting it big! If not I will walk away. I worked too hard for my money to throw it away.

Yesterday was an interesting drive from Perry to Pensacola vis US 98 along the gulf coast. The highway is dubbed "Big Bend Scenic Parkway" and runs for miles although half of the scenery is pine woods for you cannot see the water! Eventually, approaching Panama City the white sand beaches came into view. They are famous for their beauty.
My lunch stop in Apalachacola was great. The small community is historic and 'artsy' with studios and antique shops. It is a safe harbor for fishing and oyster boats. To dine on their specialty, oysters, I stopped at "Up the Creek Raw Bar" for lunch. A second-story restaurant shack elevated on stilts due to the storm surges they experience here, the customers eat on the outside patio. It overlooked the fishing fleet and a cluster of house boats, all painted in different pastel colors. Very quaint. I ordered 1/2 dozen oysters with hot sauce & minced onions, and another 1/2 dozen with olive tapenade on top. Very delicious and washed down with ice cold suds. Mmm!

My destination was the Elks Lodge in Warrington (Pensacola) where I arrived at 6:00 pm. After setting up I showered, changed and went into the Lodge to register. They had a buffet dinner with food contributed by members, all for $5.00! Beer was $2.00 a mug. I enjoyed conversation with an old fellow who was probably 2 years older than me (just kidding)! He was beginning to 'lose it' for he asked me the same questions through-out the meal. I finished and politely left to return to my comfortable quarters. I woke up at the usual time, 0530, had my coffee and learned about 0800 that I had crossed into a different time zone and it was only 0700!! I should be okay now until crossing into New Mexico, if I remember!

Being a good heart patient, I walked for 45 minutes this morning so my conscience has been relieved-at least for today. More tomorrow--

Dick
